According to the 《Daily Mail 》on June 19, some experts say marijuana can increase sexual desire in some people, but some varieties of marijuana also have some potential harms.
In our culture, marijuana is a drug that suppresses nausea, treats nerve pain, and makes people emotionally high. However, marijuana has another use: an aphrodisiac. The use of cannabis in India and China dates back to the seventh century AD. Although there is no specific research on the relationship between marijuana and sexual desire, sex therapists say the drug can help partners relax, eliminate anxiety and make sex more pleasurable. The reporter spoke with two sex experts, who discussed how marijuana can create a better sex life and the possible negative effects.
Doctors in different countries recommend using marijuana to increase libido, but scientists have only recently begun to study whether the method works. A November 2017 study by Stanford University found that women and men who smoke marijuana daily are more likely to have sex than those who don't use marijuana. Women who used marijuana daily had an average of 7.1 sexual acts over four weeks, compared with an average of 6 sexual acts for women who did not use the drug. Similarly, men who used marijuana daily had an average of 6.9 sexual acts over a four-week period, compared to 5.6 times over four weeks for men who did not use marijuana.
Although the study doesn't explicitly state cause and effect, and there are no definitive studies on how marijuana affects libido, several theories exist.
Amanda Pasciucco, a nationally certified sex therapist in West Hartford, Connecticut, told reporters: "Marijuana helps relieve stress, reduce pain and relax. "This efficacy is caused by tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or other active ingredients in cannabis. The chemical structure of THC is similar to arachidonic acid ethanolamine in the human brain, a naturally endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter that transmits chemical messages between nerve cells throughout the nervous system. These neurotransmitters affect mood, memory, attention, movement, senses, and time perception. Due to the structural similarity, THC is able to be recognized by the body and therefore alters normal brain communication. Some people experience higher sensory perception precisely because of the use of marijuana, which increases sexual desire.
Paschuko said that with marijuana, people's perception of time tends to change, so the duration of intercourse and orgasm may seem longer, even if it's not true.
However, marijuana is not a panacea, and while it is able to arouse pleasure in some people, it may also suppress the sexual desire of others. Not everyone will have the same reaction when using marijuana, on the contrary, some marijuana can make people drowsy or increase anxiety. In addition, marijuana use can create other harms. A 2015 study from the University of Copenhagen found that regular cannabis use was associated with low sperm counts. Men who used marijuana more than once a week had sperm density 28 percent lower than men who didn't smoke regularly or never smoked. Despite this, it has not stopped hemp-based products from entering the mainstream market. In 2014, a cannabis spray called Floria hit the market, which claimed to be the first sexual lubricant specifically designed to improve women's sexuality.
